A tensiometer is used to continuously measure soil moisture based on the suction tension. The size of the suction tension serves as a direct measure of the water availability in soils and is therefore an important parameter in agriculture.
When the soil becomes drier, water is sucked out of the capillaries into the soil and the water column in the chamber is reduced, creating a negative pressure.
The TNS03 tensiometer has a measuring system that measures this reduction and then sends this value to a server via the integrated LoRa module. Compared to capacitive measuring devices, a tensiometer has the advantage that it does not need to be calibrated. The measurement is independent of the composition in the soil.
The TNS03 digital tensiometer can be connected to up to two flow sensors to accurately determine the flow rate of irrigation systems.
Overall, the TNS03 digital tensiometer is a precise measuring instrument for monitoring soil moisture and optimizing irrigation. The use of advanced sensors and control units helps to optimize water consumption, increase irrigation efficiency and promote healthy growth.
Communication
The communication of the tensiometer is done over radio (LoRaWAN). A LoRaWan Gateway bridges the data between the cloud on the internet and the sensor. The range can be several kilometer depending on the landscape and obstacles - even 20km can be achieved.
All measurements are sent periodically to the Elmed-Cloud. The Data can be accessed over our webapplication and smartphone app (Available on Android and iOs) with graphical plots.
The Structure
The Tensiometer TNS-03 consists of a cylindrical shaft with a porous ceramic cell and an attached upper part.
Die head contains the whole electronics with battery, solarpanel, LoRa-antenna and sensors.
Thanks to its low energy consumption and integrated solar panel, the TNS-03 tensiometer is particularly low-maintenance.
